Wikipedia Desktop Redesign was my major project during my Student exchange program at FH Dortmund in Germany. With the guidance of Professor Roger Walk, I Deconstructed the whole experience and flow of Wikipedia and offered a new layout aiming to bring the experience of one of the most readable formats on the internet today to be contemporary, clean, and easy to use and navigate.
My Design was based on research I conducted over the day-to-day uses of 3 personas using Wikipedia regularly.
The Video here summerize all the screens and new concepts I offered to add.
Current site pain points and personas
Article Page Features
Wikipedia article page is basically one of the most readable formats globally, but yet, the experience for users is pretty poor.
The new concept of the article page gives the user full control over the reading preferences (bright or dark mode, with or without links, font size etc..), a clean and clear way to read the information, a Navigation bar on the left panel of the article and a quick information panel on the right if you just need to dig some information.
Home Page
Today, People rarely get to Wikipedia's homepage, only because it's so poorly organized, They find it easier to search for whatever they need on Google adding to the search "Wikipedia" at the end.
The new homepage is Google search inspired. focus on the search bar and links to previous searches. When scrolling down the user will see some suggestions and the communities area.
Biography Page
Biography pages are most like of the regular article pages but also allow the user the get most of the quick information they need with expand-collapse bars in the right panel.
The Pain point of users in Wikipedia biographies today is that they need to read loads of information in order to find the tiny information piece they are looking for.
On this day
rarely visited page in Wikipedia. The new design got a fresh look and a Visual-led approach
